+*-Late Night Women's Hour-*+:

History and background of  LNWH:

Woman’s Hour was the first broadcast in the 1940s, so it’s worth considering the historical and social shifts that have occurred since the show’s inception. The original show reflects possible tokenism (a show set aside for women might imply all other radio content was oriented towards men). Late Night Woman’s Hour features frank and open discussions and demonstrates societal shifts and increased gender equality although some of the issues raised to reflect the fact that society is not yet completely equal.

Themes and subjects covered in LNWH:

Structure and content of typical episodes (interviews, feature pieces, discussion, phone-in, etc.)

Presenters (age, gender, background, broadcasting history, comparison with previous presenters)

Jane Garvey (2015}Lauren Laverne (2015–2018)Emma Barnett (2018–present)

Does the programme match Radio 4's typical style and audience?

The station continues to have a balanced audience in terms of gender (49% male / 51% female). The average age of the Radio 4 listener is 56 years old and skews towards an older audience. Our target audience of 35-54 ABC1 (commonly termed 'replenishers') makes up 24% of the audience.

Use of spoken language (mode of address, formal/informal, emotional language)

Use of any other audio codes ( background ambience, music, sting, theme  )

Opportunities for audience feedback

The target audience of LNWH ( age, gender, class, interests, use of media etc.)

The blind medium: It only involves the hearing sense. It allows the audience to use their imagination.

The companion medium: Provides a strong sense of personal connection with the audience. It also offers interactive opportunities – text, email, ‘shout out’, phone-ins, requests etc.

The intimate medium: Radio is very personal and encourages intimacy by the use of direct mode of address

The undemanding medium: Listeners can do other things while listening, they don’t need to devote all of their time to it.

Summarise the differences between broadcasting and podcasting for the audience and how it may affect the content and structure of a programme.

The main difference between broadcasters and podcasting.
Broadcasters are focused on reaching (new) young audiences,
Podcasts as a way of serving their existing audiences with new and more varied content.

Define and give an example of a commercial and a public service radio broadcaster, explaining the key differences.

Commercial broadcasting overlaps with paid services such as cable television, radio and satellite television. Such services are generally partially or wholly paid for by local subscribers and are known as leased access.
Public broadcasting involves radio, television and other electronic-media outlets whose primary mission is public service. In many countries of the world, funding comes from governments, especially via annual fees charged on receivers.
Explain the identity, mission and purpose of the BBC based on its origins, history and how it is funded.
Missionvalues and public purposes. Our mission is "to act in the public interest, serving all audiences through the provision of impartial, high-quality and distinctive output and services which inform, educate and entertain".

+*-Production task - Evaluation-*+:

I used darker tones within the main central image to create an enigmatic effect within the poster. The image as a whole denotes a male protagonist with an indirect mode of address. This is symbolic because it creates a sense of mystery and correlates to the genre of the tv series: Crime Drama. I used a clipping mask of the city of London with a black and white photo filter over my title "The Engima" to present the setting of the drama to the audience whilst still maintaining some of the more cold and serious tones of the drama and the poster. I used minimal text within the poster to uphold an aspect of ambiguity within the poster, which is representative of the tv series and the crime drama genre as a whole. I included the date of release in the bottom-right corner of the poster to provide information to the audience so that they are made aware of the tv drama, and are able to access it. The idea of the audience accessing information about the drama series was also displayed in the inclusion of the Netflix logo. This shows the audience the platform in which they can find the information and actively engage in it, promoting a wider audience. As well as this, I presented the star vehicle's name above the title so that I can access this wider audience through both a fanbase and to create notability.

INDUSTRY

Ownership and Franchise

Give summary of company, history of franchise.

Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, part of the very successful games franchise, was developed by Ubisoft and released on October 30 2012, along with Assassin’s Creed III.The game was originally exclusive to the PS Vita but was later (2014) released in a modified HD version across a large range of consoles and platforms (including PS3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows). Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation offers familiar pleasures to existing fans (narrative situation of the Assassins v the Templars, open world gameplay etc.) along with new elements to target a wider audience (e.g. the use of a strong female protagonist).Video games are a relatively new media form. Consider the exponential growth of this form since the 1970s, the rapid technological development, the construction of “the gamer”and the difficulty of regulating or monitoring the impact of such a fast paced industry.

When was the game released in different formats ( e.g Vita , PS3 ) and was it a global release? Was it released in physical and online form? Explain this in detail.

The ways in which the PS Vita was attempting to tap into the increasing success of mobile gaming (smart phones, tablets etc.). The PS Vita was designed with many features usually associated with smart phones (touchscreen as well as Wi-Fi, 3G and Bluetooth capability). The game itself as part of a well-known and popular franchise may be seen as an attempt to bring high game production values to the burgeoning new mobile gaming arena. It is significant that the game was originally exclusive to the PS Vita but was later (2014)released in a modified HD version across a large range of consoles and platforms (including PS3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows). In terms of distribution these versions of the game could be purchased over the internet using such outlets as Steam, the Playstation Network or Xbox Live Arcade.

Marketing and Advertising. How was game advertised ( trailers, posters, articles etc.) and what elements of the game/ format were featured and focused upon and why?

Trailer shares conventions of high budget Hollywood film. Extra diegetic voice over/narration. Lots of action/ pro-airetic codes, and high quality orchestral soundtrack, which suggests high production values and high quality.

Reception

Summarise the sales of the game, the critical reception on different formats and audience/ fan responses and feedback.

Assassin's Creed IIILiberation has sold "close to 600,000" units, Ubisoft revealed today as part of a post-earnings financial call. ... It is also not clear if Liberation's sales volume also includes units from the game's PlayStation Vita bundle.

Regulation

Summarise the role of the organisation responsible for regulating the game's content and giving it a relevant age rating.

Video Game regulation differs around the world but is becoming standardised across many European countries.
In the UK until July 2012 video games had been regulated by the BBFC. They are now
largely regulated by the Video Standards Council (VSC) applying the PEGI system (Pan European Game Information). The PEGI system can be discussed in terms of its process (age ratings as well as visual descriptors of content) and also its attempt to harmonise
the protection of children across Europe.
Consider the effectiveness of PEGI
(possibly in comparison with the BBFC or the American ESRB system in terms of authority and compliance).
The game was classified 18 by PEGI and this in itself may be a good area for discussion.

- Links to the director, Ken Loach - Ken Loach is an independent film director
The film budget will be lower because the audience expects the themes covered by the film instead of common mainstream themes - Social political viewpoints (expressed in the film) shared ideology
The low budget is because independent films aren't expected to make large amounts of money.
- Their aim is to send a message
- Allows directors and filmmakers to be more free and innovative.
e.g. I, Daniel Blake highlights the struggles of the welfare state rather than what mainstream films follow such as the action of romance, to profit.

Paragraph 2:

Point:

The co-funding companies shape independent films.
-BFI - A smaller scale, independently run company.
-BBC - Funded by the people - Public service broadcaster
The low budget is shaped by the independent genre.
- Distribution is done through smaller scale, independent companies
- outside large scale, mainstream companies
- less funding is necessary because It was filmed largely on location (hospital, jobcentre etc.), features lesser-known actors and does not rely on special effects. e.g. Movie Marketing poster only portrayed the male protagonist who isn't well known, with minimal effects or expensive backdrop.
